about

Sharon: One evening I was on the shores of Baja, playing the banjo and put it into a sawmill tuning when this tune came to my mind and my fingers. I didn’t have words at first, but I felt strongly the idea of going home after being away. It was inspired by seeing migrating whale mothers with calves, nesting sea turtles, butterflies, and even grains of sand slowing moving to the ocean (and eventually back to the mountains via tectonic subduction and uplift) and my own travels, both geographically and emotionally. In the end, we all come back to some place that is home. Please excuse the grammatically incorrect use of ‘from whence’—I claim artistic license to make that line work. This song is the title track of our Migrations album. I’m playing my old Nelson 1800’s banjo in Sawmill tuning.

lyrics

I’m going home, this road has been so long,
The darkest part of night is just before the dawn,
Just before the dawn, I’m going home

The water’s calm, the shore a rugged one
And yet under this moon I know I must go on
Know I must go on, I’m going home

Each grain of sand, knows from whence it came
Its history brings it back to its own mountain
To its own mountain, I’m going home

I’ve gone so far, this year has been so long,
In total darkness I can still find my way home
Still find my way home, I’m going home

Beyond my sense, beyond sensibility
It’s in my bones, I know where I must be
Know where I must be, I’m going home

I’ve spread my wings, be gone for a little while
But I’ll return one day if I go 10,000 miles
If I go 10, 000 miles, I’m going home
